A minor update to Instagram for iOS has removed the ability to disable video autoplay. Now you can only disable pre-loading of videos when you’re not connected to Wi-Fi.

We’re expecting advertising to invade Instagram feeds before the end of the year, and video ads will play a part in that. Forcing auto-play of videos now will make auto-playing ads in the future grate less with users. Instagram says when it starts feeds ads, they will be more like the ‘high-quality ads (you see) when you flip through your favorite magazine.’ How far that is true remains to be seen, as Instagram’s parent company Facebook hasn’t done too well in that regard, and its concept of advertising to users seems very similar.

With auto-playing videos, it’s important to check the ‘Mute’ setting in the Video section of Instagram settings (accessible on your profile tab). Check ‘With Ringer Switch’ so your Instagram feed doesn’t start to make noises as you scroll through. Check ‘Only on Wi-Fi’ in the Preload Video section to save data while connected to your mobile network.
