The latest Instagram for Android update optimizes the photo sharing app for more devices. The app download is now half the size and has been optimized for low resolution screens.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg spoke about the importance of emerging markets during this year’s Mobile World Congress. This update to Instagram ensures popular devices like the Samsung Galaxy Y are supported. “We’ve worked to make sure that Instagram feels native and at home on any Android device,” says Instagram in a blog post.

The interface has changed a bit, with new icons and a redesigned camera screen. The simplified icons make navigation more intuitive and can scale better to different screen sizes. The app is also much faster and more responsive across the board.

This Instagram update doesn’t bring any new features but it will help Facebook reach more users around the world. The last major feature announcement was for Instagram Direct, which allows users to send private messages. I have yet to use this feature.
